Relay Crop Soybeans

Beans that were sown in growing winter wheat.  When the wheat is harvested, the beans are already growing.

Landec Ag's Intellicoat Relay Crop technology is allowing more farmers to double crop soybeans and wheat in the same field in the same year.

Here's how it works:

  • Winter wheat is planted in October in 10" to 15" rows.
  • Intellicoat coated soybeans are planted into the wheat before tillering in mid-spring.
  • The seed coating delays the emergence of soybeans by 20-30 days after planting.
  • The soybean plants then will grow between the rows of wheat until the time the wheat is harvested.
  • The soybean plants are less than 10 inches and are not damaged as the wheat is harvested.

Benefits:

  • Two paydays from one field.
  • Added soil benefits from crop rotation

Who is using it:

  • Currently offered in limited farm trials.
  • Farmers in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio are currently testing the Relay crop system.
