When I was a kid, I loved superheroes. I was obsessed with Batman, Superman, and Spiderman. But I always wondered why there weren’t more black superheroes. It was hard for me to put myself in the place of these superheroes. How could I ever be like them if I didn’t even look like them?

Kids today have it so much better. They have Luke Cage (no relation!) and Black Panther. I saw a little black boy dressed up like Black Panther the other day, and I got a little choked up.

Because to that kid, heĀ couldĀ be a superhero. He does look like the superheroes on the screen. That’s one less limitation he has than me. And I love seeing that kind of progress.

Black lives matter. But sometimes the best way to show that isn’t through protests and political change. Sometimes it’s just through the stories we tell and the characters that are in them.
